Washing machine makes noise

Popular question

If the washing machine makes noise while it is washing, you can try the following:

Step 1:

Does it make noise if the drum is turned by hand? If so, the error is most likely due to defective drum bearings. This will cause a rumbling sound, depending on how involved the bearings are. Defective bearings can also cause dark spots (rust/oil deposits) on the clothes. You can buy separate bearings for replacement, but in some cases it is a complete tub unit that needs to be replaced in the machine. When changing bearings, we also recommend changing the stuffing box (also called a simmering) at the same time, so you are sure that the machine holds tight.

Popular question

If the washing machine vibrates more than usual, you can try the following:

Step 1:

Does the machine vibrate more than usual? In that case, the fault may be due to faulty shock absorbers. Most shock absorbers are friction dampers, which work via the rubbing resistance/friction between tube and piston. Loose shock absorbers result in the machine's suspension not working properly. The error will also often - as with defective drum bearings - result in a knocking sound. If necessary, also check whether the top springs that hold the tub should be replaced at the same time.

Popular question

If the washing machine makes more noise than usual, you can try the following:

Step 1:

Vibration and noise can be caused by imbalance in the machine or an overloaded machine. Both parts could cause an imbalance, which causes the machine to stand unsteadily. Imbalance can occur when washing larger items - e.g. when washing a duvet cover, where the clothes clump together - or it can occur when washing too few textiles, which absorb extra water and thereby become extra heavy when soaked - e.g. when washing a pair of cowboy pants / jeans or when washing a bath mat. Try washing a sink with something else in the machine and see if it still makes noise and vibrates.

Step 2:

Vibration and noise can, in rare cases, be caused by the washing machine not being calibrated. Some newer washing machines have a calibration function which adjusts the machine based on where it is standing. See the machine's manual for whether your machine should be calibrated. There are also instructions for this, as it can vary from machine to machine.

Popular question

If the washing machine makes noise when emptying, you can try the following:

Step 1:

Noise when pumping out can be caused by a clogged thread or a foreign body in the pump housing. Both parts can result in the water not being able to get out quickly enough. Most washing machines have a fuse which prevents them from spinning with too much water in the machine. In some cases, when the water cannot come out of the machine quickly enough, however, you may find that the machine spins with too much water, which causes the machine to stand unsteadily and make noise as a result.
